If you want to teach your kids the adult stuff, this is what I tried and it worked
We were just looking for a movie to watch, and I picked The Hangover without thinking too much about it. There was no plan behind this at all. I have never really seen my kids as children I need to censor things for, and I am happy to answer all of their questions and talk to them about anything, so putting on a film like this did not feel like a risk to me.
I had seen it before, so I knew what was coming, and I thought it could be fun to watch their reaction. The film is full of inappropriate things, and most of them my kids already knew a little about from the internet. Watching it together created a space for us to discuss what was in the movie, and also the things they had already seen somewhere else, and every one of them became a chance for them to learn about it from me. Roofies, cocaine, how a person can get so drunk that they lose a whole night, and a tooth, and a finger. We paused, they asked, I answered. And when something came up that I did not know, or did not know for sure, we looked it up together.
I find it fun that I get to be the one who told them what a roofie is, and the one who explained how people can die of cocaine, and how to avoid getting too drunk, and how to be a responsible drunk person.
They love it so much that they have watched all three films twice. Part 2 was fun for them because it is set in Bangkok, which is the city we live in, although we did not actually know any of the places in it except Lebua.
They learned a lot of things that are actually useful, and some of it is the kind of thing you really do need to be educated about. Now they understand what is okay to try, how much is too much, and what they definitely do not want to try or get themselves into. They also know how to go and educate themselves about it.
It is unusual for any of us to learn this stuff from our parents. We learn it from friends, or we learn it by going out and trying the crazy things ourselves, and that does not always end well.
I think that is what makes this one of the best things we have done together, because they got to learn it from me, or learn it together with me, and they liked it that way. And I think parents are actually the best people to teach their children about this.
This movie actually brought us even closer together, and now this kind of thing is on the list of what they talk to me about too. I became the person they come to about all of this, well before their teen years.
I know many people might think this is super inappropriate. I just like to be creative, so I gave it a try, and the result was amazing. I think this is the easiest way for parents to teach their children about all the naughty stuff, and to get your kids to open up, so that you are the one they come to in their teen years when they are curious about this kind of thing.
